|Shelly Bedsaul is our December featured Artist. “Winter’s Joy” is a collection of whimsical winter images rooted in folk art traditions. There’s a meditative rhythm to folk art techniques and a simplicity that brings back childhood memories. We may have gray skies, but it’s the best time for snow, cozy fires and chunky men brave enough to wear red suits that keep reindeer as pets. It’s a time for books, warm afghans, hot cocoa and savoring the silence of the world padded by snow, a quiet perfection to close out the old year.
Shelly works in oils, colored pencil, acrylic and hand-pulled block prints. Her styles range from stylized realism to abstract geometrics. She’s inspired by mythology, the human condition, humor, quantum theory, music and coffee. Art has been a major part of her life since memory began. She is self-taught or rather 66 years of independent study. It was never a question of “should I”, but “just do”. Her move to Topeka made the possibility to go her own way and Foole’s Dream Studio was born in the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District. “My father said I was a fool, but George Carlin said the medieval “e” made me a professional.”
