All Veterans Memorial

Dedicated September 30, 2006

Promark Design, Schwert Design Group, Digginger Foundry, and Kelly Construction

Location: Great Overland Station

Just to the South of Great Overland Station on the BNSF Plaza sits a unique piece of art and engineering. Professionals from Promark Design, Schwert Design Group, Digginger Foundry, and Kelly Construction designed this sculpture and the surrounding plaza. The four primary elements of fire, wind, water and earth are represented in the design.

The US Military have been using trains to transport troops and resources from the invention of the steam engine. It Is the privilege of stations to celebrate this relationship. As a part of the All Veteran’s Memorial, Veteran’s names are inscribed on bricks commemorating their service to our country. This plaza was dedicated on September 30, 2006.

 Welda Depot and Train Park

On the East side of Great Overland station we have the Welda Depot and Train Park. The Depot was moved to Topeka in 2011 and restored. A caboose, baggage car, refrigerator car, and superintendents car join Welda Depot in the Train Park. Cars and Depot we donated by Marvin Robertson of Lawrence, KS.

Health Access Tip:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderated intensity aerobic activity or or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week, and kids 6-17 years old should get at least 60 minutes per day of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity, mostly aerobic.

Activity:

As your walking back to the Kansas Ave Strip from the Great Overland Station try getting your heartrate up to your target heart rate zone.

Your maximum heart rate is about 220 minus your age. Target heart rate during moderate intensity activities is about 50-70% of maximum heart rate, while during vigorous physical activity it’s about 70-85% of maximum.
